4 out of 4 Stars (very rare) Anngladys

This is a gut-wrenching, absolutely moving book! Once I began reading it, I wasn’t able to put it down. As Theresa Marafito shares her journey from childhood to adulthood, highlighting the special challenges that she faced due to her visual impairment, I couldn’t help but stay glued all the way.

Theresa describes how hard she tried to be independent in spite of being blind in one eye and having only partial vision in the other. Later in life, she becomes totally blind. She narrates her experiences as a child, and point out how one teacher, at a camp she had attended, worked hard to help her use whatever little vision she had to the fullest.

She shares her journey through high school and college. Then she gets married and has children… one of whom has a visual disability as well and goes on to lose her sight altogether later in life. She also shares some of her experiences at work, and helps the reader to really see life from her perspective.

Theresa Marafito’s life is visited by many challenges, cancer being one of them, plaguing those nearest and dearest to her. Somehow, she succeeds at living a pretty good, love-filled and independent life…up until her death. I can’t begin to describe how those last pages of this precious book gripped at my heart.

There aren’t many books that I read and read again, but this one, oh my! I’ve already repeated some sections several times, and I will definitely be reading it again very soon.

What I liked most about the book is the authentic way in which it is written. It’s also sprinkled with humour every now and then, and many great lessons for all to learn.

What I didn’t like was the use of foul language in some of the areas. Other than that, it’s an awesome book, and I feel privileged to have gotten a chance to read it.

This 396-page-book is well written and presented. I would give it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to others who would like to learn how it is to live with visual impairment, and also to those who generally enjoy reading memoirs.
